Coming Back to the Land: The Spivey Farm Legacy
The soil of North Carolina has been calling me home my entire life. Born and raised in Washington DC, I spent childhood summers on my grandparents' Southern farm where the stories of my Great-Grandparents Charlie and Ellen Spivey took root in my soul. Their hands worked this very land in the early 1900s, raising 10 children and countless crops that nourished both body and spirit. Every time I pressed my small hands into this earth as a child, I could feel their presence guiding me toward a future I didn't yet understand.
After years in the city, I finally answered their whispered call to return to our family land. Now, as I walk the same paths where Great-Grandpa Charlie once tended his cattle and Great-Grandma Ellen harvested vegetables for her canning jars, I'm creating an agricultural space that honors their legacy while nurturing new growth. By transforming the Spivey farm into an educational destination that celebrates Black agricultural excellence, I'm not just preserving our family's story—I'm continuing it, adding my own chapter to a narrative that flows like sap through the family tree my ancestors planted generations ago.
Our Family's Roots
In the early 1900s, my Great Grandpa Charlie Spivey did something extraordinary – he purchased this land at a time when Black land ownership was both a radical act of courage and a declaration of hope. Alongside my Great Grandma Ellen, they didn't just build a farm; they built a legacy. Together, they worked this soil, raised 10 children, and created a place where their grandchildren would learn the true meaning of resilience, family, and connection to the land.
Black Land Loss
Black land loss in America represents one of the most significant reversals of economic progress in our nation's history. At their peak in 1910, Black farmers owned approximately 16-19 million acres, but today that number has plummeted to less than 4 million acres—a loss of over 80%. In North Carolina specifically, Black-owned farmland decreased from more than 2 million acres in the early 1900s to roughly 150,000 acres today.
